Overall, I agree with his ‘main’ point that he worded very well, and I myself say I am ‘apolitical’. I mean I educate myself some, I care, but either way it doesnt look so good anyway, so I remain for the most part, detached from politics. I do see many churches and religious entities preaching to the masses about the evils of one candidate or another….even encouraging churchgoers to vote one way or the other, which I persoanlly believe is an enfringement on an individuals rights, but whatever. I just dont think politics has a place in worship services, or church.
I didnt like so much his comment on Sarah Palin. I do think staying home with children is a phonomenal and worthy thing, but I dont find it is my place to say or rule the absolute wand over it. Sometimes I do see God make allowances in individuals life for these things. Not every case is the same and i sometimes feel it would be wiser for us not to lay judgment when we dont understand Gods perfect will for a person. I am sure many here will say it is already laid out for us biblically, but I see room made for exceptions, a persons process and growth, error, and to just show His sovereignty that He Himself is above even the ‘rules’. It isnt fair IMO to judge when we are not walking in a persons shoes…..pointing out she has a ‘disabled’ baby is beside the point. If Piper believes because Palin is female she should be at home with her children, then say that. Dont make it a thing simply because the one child is disabled.
Then, due to my statments in the prior paragraph, I didnt so much like how he embraced the possibility of an African American as the next potential president. He just downs Palin, and then says that. I got the point, but I thought it was kinda funny.
I do have similar thoughts on the public being way too invested in this, and any election. One can become so diverted in their daily life with all the time and enrgies they place toward touting about the election, and studying it out. BUT….everybody has their passions; so be it. Some people look more toward the future and maybe that is partially their gift so if they want to become invested in the election, maybe that is Gods calling for them to do, just as it is some’s calling to research out autism for a hope for a cure. I did not like, and ty[pically dont like, when people say, “Are You a Christina”…which was Pipers retort to a man who “had way too much invested” in the election. Um, none of us have arrived, right? I dont understand why we sometimes feel it is us holding each other accoutnable by questioning anothers belief system. There are times to have wisdom and admit we dont know everything God wants an individual to do that day with his or her life. We arent God. I try my best to be more careful with judging in this manner as i have had it doen to me, and have committed that wrong against others, supposing to know all the details of that persons life and expectation before God. Sometimes it is better to ask, sometimes it is better to live and let live. Christinas have issues, deep ones, complex ones…just like any other human being sinner on earth. You find Christians deep into patterns of sin….in bondage to addictions, doing things they themselves dont want to do. Just because I happen to walk into their life one day and see 3 pieces of what they do that day, doesnt give me a right to comment. I think we are wise when we can question a persons committment to God only when they are sucked up into grave sin….or clearly backsliding…in a carting way, not an accusatory way, realizing that at all times, before our own hearts, WE are the chief of sinners.
Just my opinion. I hope it didnt come off too harsh….but these were my thoughts as I watched the video.
I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY needed to hear this message. WOW is about all I can say. I have been so worried about Obama being elected. I needed this message TODAY!!!!! I am going to link this to my blog.
Kelly, did you know that in a follow-up to this video, John Piper said the following, emphasis mine?:
“Not only that, a person with my view may very well vote for a woman to be President if the man running against her holds views and espouses policies that may, as far as we can see, do more harm to more people than we think would be done by electing a woman President and thus exalting a flawed pattern of womanhood.
In my view, defending abortion is far worse sin for a man than serving as Vice President is for a woman.”
It’s true…we are all chief of sinners…BEFORE Jesus bought us. Now we are redeemed, and I think God wants us to live like we are. Humble, yes. Pathetic, no.
And as such, Scripture doesn’t support your assertion that we are to just keep quiet, let everyone do their own thing and not “judge” them.
II Thessalonians 3 gives a detailed example of part of our job in the body of Christ. Paul lays out some detailed “do’s” of the Bible (i.e. “a man must work to eat”) And repeats that the church is to “follow their example”. THEN…he goes on to warn the church that if someone does not follow these basic guidelines, they were to be admonished like a brother and to be rejected familial fellowship.
The “new” Christianity doesn’t want to ascribe any “rule” to be followed, any doctrine, any thing that is absolute.
This is not Christianiy at all, but heresy.
Piper didn’t question this man’s salvation; he was asking him if he believed in a basic tenet of the Christian faith–God’s sovereignty. He was admonishing him as brother, just like Scripture teaches.
If Obama gets into the White House, he has promised to do what he can to further the cause of abortion. For those of you who are still planning to vote third party, please, please, please pray hard before you do that. Please.
On the surface, it seems to make sense that voting for McCain would “lessen” the atrocities of abortion. But we are NOT understanding a lot of things about this issue.
Give one instance of a Republican in office lessening the number of abortions being peformed? Did it improve with Bush? Do you know how much increased funding he provided for Planned Parenthood?
The issue is not abortion..they just want us to get sidetracked, thinking that those issues are going to change depending on who’s elected.
The issues are much deeper than that, and until we get to those, Democrat or Republican isn’t going to change abortion.
Abortions will most likely not decrease if McCain is elected. However, Obama has outright promised to do whatever he can to INCREASE abortions in this country, and if he is elected they certainly will increase. While I’m not a fan of either party, and had originally intended to vote third party, being enlightened to Obama’s absolute commitment to INCREASE abortions has changed my vote. He needs to be kept out of office. If the only viable way of doing that is McCain, than so be it. While I think there are many important issues to consider in this election, an increased holocaust of helpless infants trumps them all, in my opinion.
To Curious: Obama can increase the number of abortions by (1) appointing Supreme Court judges who are pro-abortion, and (2) signing the Freedom of Choice Act as president, which he has promised to do as president. For details on the FOCA, see here: http://theologica.blogspot.com/2008/10/what-is-freedom-of-choice-act.html. He has been given a 100% rating by I don’t think the world will come to an end if Obama is president either, but he could sure do a lot to hurtle this country even further down the wrong track (don’t forget, he keeps saying that he will change this country, and I don’t think that is as benign as some people are taking it to be).
And Kelly, I do agree with you wholeheartedly that the main issue is not abortion. The Republican Party is messed up too. But the things that have surfaced about Obama all add up to a very disturbing package. I do understand your convictions.
Sarah, Obama can do nothing to increase abortion. Each individual will make that decision for herself. Some of the poorest people in our nation find money for their vices be they alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, abortion or cable t.v.
If John McCain is elected nothing will change. These women who want abortions will find ways to have them. Even if he gets Roe v. Wade overturned, and I doubt he will, the decision will just go to the states. What will happen next is that women in states that have outlawed abortion will travel to get one. People go to amazing lenghts to get what they want.
The third party candidate Chuck Baldwin is the only run running that I know of that will give the unborn the same right to life as you and I and end this horrible practice on every inch of our soil. That is why my husband, my mother and I have already cast our votes for him.
I urge everyone to resist the temptation to act out of fear and not cast their vote for ANY candidate that would be okay with leaving abortion legal in ANY part of our great nation.
come to the church. It will strengthen the church!” But hoping for suffering is wrong. It is
similar to saying, “I hope I get some serious illness because it will strengthen my faith.”
Jesus taught us to pray the opposite: “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil” (Matt. 6:13). Paul urged us to pray not for persecution but “for kings and all who are
in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every
way” (1 Tim. 2:2). So Christians should hope and pray that such difficult times do not
come. But if they do come, then it will be right to trust God to bring good out of them.
Tomorrow is the day!! I only hope and pray that more people that read this blog will wake up and realize just what Obama can and will do to our free America. McCain sure does not pose the threat that Obama openly and allegedly PROMISES. People I beg of you vote McCain/Palin!! I for one want to still live in a free country where I can teach my children, work where I want. IF you do not understand what I am saying PLEASE read up on Socialism. That is where Obama wants to take us.
While it’s sad, there are many women who orignally intend abortion who don’t go through with it for reasons that aren’t so high and mighty such as affordability, parental notification, or any other number of state “blocks” in the way. Obama has promised to overturn all of these. For women who are can’t afford it, under Obama they will have access to our tax dollars to fund the murder of their child. Crisis pregnancy centers prevent many many abortions every year, either with simple encouragment or ultrasound technology, and Obama has said he desires to strip all government funding from crisis pregnancy centers. Whether we like it or not, these simple measures *WILL* mean increased abortions.
The third party candidate Chuck Baldwin is the only run running that I know of that will give the unborn the same right to life as you and I and end this horrible practice on every inch of our soil. That is why my husband, my mother and I have already cast our votes for him.
Sadly Chuck Baldwin can’t win–so you have given your vote to Obama! Why give Obama the right to destroy America and then you will NEVER get the chance to see abortion reversed. Again the devil doesn’t care which ditch he gets you in the liberal or the ultra conservative–just so he gets his man in. The outcome is still the same. Palin stands for some very good conservative standards—why can’t we give her and McCain a chance? It is better than selling out to the devil!! By the way how do you think our daughters are going to look in head dresses and veils?
I thought about doing a post entitled “God is bigger than the Boogie Man” (if you don’t know Veggie Tales, that won’t make sense to you.)
At this point I’m just shaking my head in disbelief at the panicked Christians running around acting like we don’t serve the God that spoke the universe into existence, or parted the Red Sea, or provided the sacrifice for Abraham ONLY after he had raised the knife…
Until we fear God more than man, and more than Obama, we’ll wind up in the same place, no matter who is elected.
Can you imagine Daniel saying, “God, I know you don’t want me to bow to other idols, BUT FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE THEY’RE GOING TO ROAST ME!”
No….Daniel said, “I’ll do the right thing, come what may.” Or more precisely,
“My God is able to deliver me…and EVEN IF HE DOESN’T, I will not bow to your gods.”
I seriously resent the suggestion that voting for Baldwin is morally superior and voting for McCain is a bold sin. I am not afriad of Obama, I don’t think he is the boogey-man. I understand that God is still on his throne no matter how many women murder their babies, or who wins this election tomorrow. If it were any other ho-hum democrat running, I can guarantee you I would be voting third party. However, we have a man who has literally promised that he will do everything possible to ensure that more and more innocent lives will be slaughtered under his watch. If Obama gets in and this comes to pass, that will be extremely sad. I’m not voting for my pastor, I’m voting for the office of president, and in this case, there is only one viable alternative to Obama. Come what may, I know my citizenship is not in this world, and I know that Jesus will return and redeem and reign over His creation. But those certainties should *NOT* make me complacent about the innocent babies that are being murdered, and those who advocate it, in the here and now.
Sometimes we try to claim God’s will when He is trying to give us other options which reminds me of a story I heard. There was a flood in a town and there was a man who people kept trying to get to leave but he would say no, God will get me out of this; I just have to keep waiting for God. Well, a rescue boat came by and tried to get the man to get in but the man said no, God will provide me a way out. The water was rising and the man was up on his porch and another boat came along and tried to get the man to get in the 2nd boat and he said no, God will provide me a way out and refused again to get in the rescue boat. The water kept rising and the man had to get up on top of his house and along came a helicopter and tried to rescue the man and he again said no, God will get me out of this—well, the man drowned and when he got to Heaven he said God, why didn’t you rescue me–I put all my trust in You. To which God replied, “I sent you two boats and a helicopter.” Are we turning down one of our boats or maybe a helicopter? We can’t stick our hands in a fire and pray that God won’t let us get burned. We shouldn’t wish for persecution.
You’re forgetting a MAJOR factor, and I’ll use your own quote to remind you:
“Personally, I whole-heartedly believe that the feminist movement was one sweeping evil ideology that caused a multitude of evils we are still suffering from today.”
Abortion is only a symptom. Yes, it breaks my heart to think about Obama’s stance; ut frankly, I don’t think there will be “more” abortions than if McCain gets in office. Women abort babies because we created a place where babies get in their way. Every woman who wants an abortion CAN and will get one.
Treating the subject of abortion this way is nothing but a bandaid over cancer.
Our only hope for turning the tide of abortion (which is a judgement) is a return to truth, a return to right, and a return to God.
Compromising in our voting ethics because “we don’t really have a choice” is not a return. It’s a compromise.
Promoting a modern-day feminist and a man who really isn’t pro-life (among other things), in my opinion, is not the vote to win God’s favor.
Great story…I’ve never heard it. What has that got to do with the election?
God never dangles “a little less than really evil” in front of us and say, “It’s all you’ve got…guess you better take it.”
I think it’s time we dust off those OT stories of God’s mighty power proved in the lives of men who believed great things and were willing to stand for truth even when it didn’t make any sense.
McCain, our deliverer? Don’t think so. My Deliverer is coming.
I agree with you!! This is bigger than what people are thinking. Obama has pulled no punches. He has blatantly declared he doesn’t like America or what she stands for. And that he will work to change America. I wish that we could get it through our heads that he intends to take our freedoms. Come on, this guy agrees with Muslim, he has been indoctrinated with the Black Liberation Theology, (which if you don’t understand this please read up on it), which basically hates white people. And yes God is coming back to redeem His people but He did tell us to occupy until He comes—he didn’t tell us to sell ourselves out to the devil. And no we are not voting for our Pastor, but we are voting to keep the freedoms that our ancestors shed innocent blood for. Does that not count for something? No!! McCain doesn’t believe just like me and yes there are alot of things that he could do better but really people please wake up and realize that if Obama gets in there goes our freedom.
Yes, I did struggle with Palin’s role in this election. However, the feminist bent in our culture is not going to be changed by voting third party, either. But realistically we *can* preserve a few of our freedoms, and probably save a few thousand babies. That’s a *possible* real and tangible result from this election. I have personally come to the conclusion that throwing my vote to Obama (by voting third party) because I’m squeamish about Sarah Palin, would be self-righteously ignoring the fact that there probably is some good her running mate can do. And furthermore, voting third party would also be a compromise for me. 1) Chuck Baldwin and his running mate are not perfect individuals, either 2) I don’t agree with all the Constitutionalist party platforms 3) There is virtually no good he can do in this election and 4) We *do* have a very radical candidate who opposes almost everything a conservative Christian believes in who has promised to untold damage and destruction to our nations innocent babies, our economy, our constitution, and who knows what else. Either way, I’m pretty sure voting this election is not a sin issue, unless you’re voting for Obama. Everyone is trying to figure out how they can do the most good, and my conviction is that voting third party is not the answer this time around.
Thank you for that video post, very timely and much needed. I’ve been focused on the elections too much as well, feeling hopeless because I didn’t like where either candidate stands. God is in control, and even if it means punishment then His will be done.
well, i suppose when Piper said, “Are you a christian?” it SOUNDED like he was essentially questioning what this man believed. and that somehow because the man invested too much time in the election, maybe he doesnt ‘believe’ the “right” things. yes, it wasnt a black and white judgment, but i dont see how these types of verbal behavior is really seeking the good of the person at question.

Sara,
You’re forgetting a MAJOR factor, and I’ll use your own quote to remind you:
Anon,
Great story…I’ve never heard it.
Sara,
I agree with you!!
