The Mind of Christ
We sang this song in church this morning. I just love the words. Verse two was “mine” today–I’m leaning heavily on His strength right now, and seeing the beautiful plan He unfolds through weakness is a glorious thing.
The sermon was from John Piper on “esteeming others better than yourself.” Essentially, that we are to look to the needs and comforts of others before our own. And I thought about the sweet bundle growing inside of me. Yes, it has brought me temporary weakness and some hardship. Paul said he was willing to suffer in this body–to “pour himself out like a drink offering”–so that the church would prosper.
What is my attitude as I lay down this small portion of my physical strength in order to sustain another life? “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus”. Am I willing to be poured out for others? Starting, here, starting now?
And then another glimpse of the intricate Kingdom-plan unfolding…the body of Christ can only serve others where there is need. There must be needs–weakness, hardships, trials, so that we can live out this life of Christ and be molded to His image.
And even in our own family, when others would say, “poor children having to help their mother in her weakness“…Praise God for this opportunity for my children to share in the mind of Christ….to become vessels of grace and partake in the “washing of feet” with our Savior! We forget what the Christian life is, don’t we?
I’ve had two friends bring me meals this week, at just the right time. The recipient of Christ’s hands and feet. A reminder that He is strong when I am weak. I can partly understand Paul’s exclamation…”therefore, I will glory in my weakness…”
As we sang I had the thought that I would like to try starting out each day at home by singing this together. Don’t we need the constant, verbal reminder of our mission in Christ?
May the mind of Christ my Savior
Live in me from day to day
By His love and power controlling
All I do and say
May the word of God dwell richly
In my heart from hour to hour
So that all may see I triumph
Only through His power
May the peace of God my Father
Rule my life in everything
That I may be calm to comfort
Sick and sorrowing
May the love of Jesus fill me
As the waters fill the sea
Him exalting, self abasing
This is victory
May I run the race before me
Strong and brave to face the foe
Looking only unto Jesus
As I onward go

You said the sermon was from Jon Piper. Do you attend a house church? We attended a house church for a while.
Civilla,
We don’t attend house church, but today, a church met at our house! We have a banquet room built onto our house, and one of our friends’ churches met here and had a bridal shower afterwards. The young man preaching read a sermon by John Piper.
Our church was originally started as a house church, but now we have a beautiful old-fashioned-looking church.
Our family memorize this song several years ago. I am amazed at how many people have never heard it! We just sung this song in our family devotions last night!
