We don’t make a big deal out of Valentine’s Day, but I rarely turn down an opportunity to celebrate a holiday that revolves around chocolate
I thought about a fun idea we may try this year…
What if we made a simple, fun treat for the family, then gathered around, maybe lit some candles, and Mom and Dad either tell stories of their engagement/wedding, or watch the wedding video with the children.
Reminiscing on those years brings such warm memories, but also connects you with your children in a new way (they may find it hard to believe you were ever THAT young.) It’s a romantic activity the whole family can participate in, giving the children an opportunity to relish the love between their parents.
Here are some ideas for homemade treats:

Marshmallows on a stick, dipped in chocolate and sprinkles.

These are easy with a can of Cool Whip. Just split the strawberries two ways.

I love this fancy/simple dessert trick…Swiss Rolls cut cross ways. You can also do the jelly rolls with strawberry filling.

Hot chocolate is a family favorite…here is one my favorite recipes: 6 cups cold milk added to 1 pkg Jell-O chocolate instant pudding. Whisk and bring just to simmer on medium heat. Top with whipped topping in each mug.

Rice Krispy Treats dyed with red food coloring and shaped into hearts–the kids should enjoy helping with this one.

Everyone love the classic chocolate-covered strawberry!

These treats look really yummy and simple!
We make a big deal as a family for V-day. Usualy the menu consists of steak, shrimp scampi, twice baked potatoes, homemade rolls, and whatever else the children want. It’s much cheaper than taking everyone out and they get to try some fancier food that we normally don’t buy. The table is set with candles and everyone dresses up. Cheesecake and sherbet are usually dessert. Everyone looks forward to this day every year. Last year the children made it all themselves with a bit of help from dad as I had given birth only a few days before.
How sweet (wow…no pun intended, but I’m runnin’ with it!) We are trying to watch our budget and not spend much on any holiday or birthday, but I may have to splurge for the ingredients for some of these. DH loves chocolate just as much as I do
We have been doing a Valentine’s Day breakfast every year for about 4-5 years now (except for last year when I didn’t want to let my morning sickness ruin a good thing forever.) The children love it because they feel so naughty eating chocolatey things for breakfast! I know they have been talking about it for weeks now.
GREAT IDEAS! Thanks… I might have to try them. And yes, I agree with you… anything chocolate is exciting.
I love this idea! Make romantic love an inter-generational event (the celebrating of it), just like at a wedding. And it just so happens that I have been hankering some rice crispy treats…
Oh, don’t forget cranberry juice mixed with ginger ale,or my fave, V8 Splash mixed with sprite. Also, My hubby and I like to go out to one of those nice coffee bars the evening after V-day, and get a cup of coffee each (a latte for me if I want something extra), and a box of half-price Godiva chocolates. They really are as good as people say.
Cute ideas
We’re going to make red velvet cupcakes with vanilla frosting and pink and red sprinkles.
Sharing your “wedding story” is a wonderful way to celebrate the day with children. This Valentine’s Day, my husband and I are actually going to have our marriage convalidated (it’s a Catholic thing) so we’ll be renewing our vows in front of witnesses and then going to a friend’s house for brunch. It should be a lot of fun.
If you want to know more about convalidation, feel free to head to my blog (http://applecidermama.blogspot.com) on Valentine’s Day for my post.

I do a special Valentine’s dinner, including cloth napkins and candlelight, for my husband and little children. Our children each get one of those dollar boxes of chocolate from Walmart that has about 5 chocolates in it (they can have one piece a day) and they think those are just great!
I must say they ALL look delicious. We will certainly be trying the ones of which I can get the ingredients here in Peru. YUMMMY! I’ll let you know how they turn out.

Would you mind doing a post on being Joyful in Motherhood – especially on the crazy, bad days. I have really lost my joy these days (I am sure pregnancy has something to do with it). And I have ZERO desire to read or listen to things that I know will help. Any Godly advice or suggestions you have will help.
Jess,
Oh that is a great topic that we ALL need. Let me pray/think on that a few days and see what comes!
