Piper’s short message here articulates so clearly a huge misunderstanding among the modern church…that if we stand *against* things we are somehow unloving or judgmental; when in fact, the simple message from Scripture and Christ’s teaching is that LOVE MUST HATE.
I hope that people do not misinterpret that message. In know way is he talking about hating “People,” but hating the “sin” and the “ways of this JUNKY world” that have entangled them! We hate that stuff, because we LOVE God and His people and they are complete abominations to all that is right and true!
Don’t worry about the grammar! I’m so sorry you’re not getting help…
“He giveth more grace as our burdens grow greater,
He sendeth more strength as our labors increase;
To added afflictions He addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials He multiplies peace.”
I was just thinking about this yesterday and today, in response to the “hate crimes” bill and also in response to a letter to the editor that was railing on all those “hatemongering rightwingers”.
THIS IS GREAT! One of the biggest arguments from Christians and non-Christians alike is this: “The Bible says not to judge.” That is only part of the verse. It says judge not, lest ye be judged. Don’t tell your brother about the sliver in his eye while you have a plank in yours. Don’t be guilty of a sin and correct your brother of the same. We are called to rebuke the church in love. To admonish in psalms and hymns. It just gets a little uncomfortable for us. That discomfort is what is letting you know you SHOULD do it. It is your love for that person that is not wanting to hurt their feelings. That is how you know you are doing it right, as from the Lord. When you are doing it to “prove them wrong” an evaluation of motives and heart is required. I was just reading James today, chapter 3. In it the author explains that our wisdom about other people can come from 2 sources. It ends by saying wisodom from above is not hypocritical. Once again, the Bible is very clear. Judge (not condemn) if you are not guilty in your own heart; do so with love and all the tools of the Lord.

Wow! That sent chills up my spine! I’m putting that on my share list.
I’m not usually fond of John Piper’s stuff, but even I’ll admit he had something really good to say here!

Kelly,
This is a powerful few minutes to listen to and I couldn’t agree more with this strong and RIGHT-ON message.
God Bless,
