True Grace Includes Brokenness: Voddie Baucham

I have loved this message by Voddie Baucham that our family listened to together again this morning (we are battling the stomach virus–I know, perfect timing, huh?)

I’m posting one of 6 clips…I highly recommend listening to the whole message–so very powerful.

I’ll preface this clip with the gist of Dr. Baucham’s message, so in need of hearing today…warning, it’s counter-”Christian”-culture:

He says in the first clip:

“There is a great tragedy afoot in our culture, and the great tragedy is this: we believe that all discomfort is problematic; that there is no room for it in our culture….we avoid brokenness, but it’s not just out there, it’s also in the church…there’s a new movement that says ‘When you come to Christ, there is no need for brokenness…in fact, there’s no need for brokenness before you come to Christ’.”

He reveals that the “new brand” of Christianity tells people that God doesn’t want them to feel bad (after all, “there is therefore now no condemnation to him who is in Christ Jesus”) over their sin. However, the Bible speaks volumes about the “appropriateness” of brokenness over our sin.  It is both needful and right for us to recognize how depraved we are without Christ (and no, we are now no longer condemned eternally), and to remember the stain that sin leaves.  God allows the scars of our sins to remain to cause us to continue to hate it and strive to avoid it.

David cried out, a whole year after his affair with Bathsheba,

“Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice.”

“God breaks us in order to remake us“, Baucham said.  And when we buy this gospel of “God doesn’t want me to feel bad about my sin” we buy a word that is not of God.

Jesus Christ came to forgive sins; but He leaves their memory with us so that we never want to go back.

AWESOME!!!!!! I always read the part in the Bible where Paul asks God to take away this infirmity and God resonds with “My grace is sufficient” as this: I think it has nothing to do with physical infirmity. As one who cursed God and lived a large portion of my life in direct opposition to Him, I believe that it is the memory of the things in the past that Paul wished he could forget (he actively persued and persecuted the church). I myself have asked for things to be purged from my memory. God’s response to me? “It is enough that I have chosen to purge them from mine.” His grace is sufficient. And my memories serve to not hold me in the bondage of guilt, but remind me of how far God has taken me and how much further He has to go. He is awesome and perfect.
Thanks for a message all of us need to hear over and over.

    I love this message.

And he’s right. Until I was truly broken over my sin, I treated Jesus like a nice “accessory” to be added to my own flimsy suit of “righteousness”.

I cringe now to think of the audacity of my pride. And am ever thankful for God’s merciful intervention in my heart.

Would you be willing to share with me what church or denomination you are a part of? Just curious as my husband and I are seeking.

  9. Word Warrior says:

    S Weaver,

We are reformed Presbyterian. Do you currently attend church now and are just looking for a church that’s more like-minded?

  10. S. Weaver says:

My husband is a pastor and we serve in the SBC and just praying for direction to find a denomination more like-minded. We don’t have problems doctrinally with the Southern Baptist Convention, just that we have served in a few SBC churches and have yet to find one that even comes close to having folks with like-mindedness to us. Our oldest is in the 5th grade this year, and headed to the dreaded youth group next year with her 4 younger brothers to follow in the next few years. Our youngest is 4 wks, and we are faced daily with the differences in our choices to raise our family and the possible call to action in order to “protect” our values for our family from the church, as crazy as that sounds. I agree so much with the convictions you have on family. We are just hard pressed to find an SBC church that adopts these same principles. Just curious where people like you come from because I feel like I can only read about them in blogs. Ha!

  11. Joyce says:

We are also SBC folks and I know exactly how you feel.
