Homemade Baby Gifts

project pic 1

Every year we participate in a local fall festival, usually selling our homemade skin products.  This year we were late deciding we’d participate, and I had this sudden “aha” moment about what we could make to sell.  When the idea came my children were laughing as I stumbled over the words in a flurry of excitement trying to tell them what I was envisioning.

My vision came to life.  My 10-year-old son drew the picture (he’s working on a few more) and my two oldest girls made the bags.  (I had the idea and did the iron-on transfer–surely that counts for something.)

We’re going to put our baby skin products in the bag along with the onesie and sell it as a set.

As is customary in my brain, the idea extended itself.  I think we are going to make these cute little onesies available for sale through the blog.  Do you think there is a market?

Beautiful, Kelly! So creative! Love the onesie! Are you going to sell the bags through the blog also, with the baby products included? Do you have the bags in different colors, like PINK? umm – not that I’m interested or anything… ;)

  2. Word Warrior says:

I did think about selling the whole set. I originally planned to do the bags in pink and blue. BUT, neither of those colors were at Wal-Mart but the cream color was and I loved it for its natural look. So I think I’m going to stick to those…I’ll actually have to see if my daughters are up for making more to sell. My oldest has a REALLY full plate this year. The onesies for sure, I think.

  4. Jen says:

oh, when is the fall festival? we missed it last year but would really love to come this year. :) jen

  5. You never cease to amaze me with your creativity Kelly! I love this idea! You and your kids did a great job!

  6. Word Warrior says:

    Jen,

Yes, Ashton drew the lamb, but actually he does much more impressive work. He humored me with this “baby project”. ;-)

Fall Festival is Oct. 10–hope y’all can come!

  7. Kelly L says:

So cute…how great you can all work together and that you accept their work. It shows how much you love and value your kids.

  8. misty says:

how sweet! I would buy them!

  9. Terri says:

These are precious! My girls made some diaper bags this summer with several friends and filled them with all kinds of baby stuff and gave them to the local pregnancy center. Now I want them to make me one! I love to see families working together – producing. How much for the set?

  10. Word Warrior says:

    Terri,

Haven’t decided yet–need to crunch some numbers and figure cost and labor wages :-)

  11. Charity says:

What a talented family you have!! Do please make them available…I can already imagine my little bald 6month old boy in the onesie. So sweet!

  12. Diane says:

I really really like these! Sadly, I have no babies in my future (unless the Lord has a big ole surprise for me!) but if I did I would *love* to have one of those onesies. There is so much baby stuff that is so garish and tacky, or overly cutesy. These are sweet and simple… not overwhelming to a dear little one, if you know what I mean.
    Very very nice, my dear♥

  13. KB says:

Very cute, Kelly! It is so wonderful to see how resourceful you and your family are! Quite an inspiration for me!
Just out of curiosity, did your son learn how to draw so beautifully from a program, or does he come by his gift naturally?
We use a quasi-CM approach to education, I’d like for the children to be able to incorporate sketches with their nature studies and/or narration, but I think it would be helpful for the children to have a systematic approach to drawing. We also don’t have a lot of $$, so I’ve been looking around for easy-to-implement books or online resources to give me some direction.

(Furthermore, I can’t draw my way out of a paper bag! :-( )

  14. Word Warrior says:

    KB,

My son has a natural gift for which I am so grateful. (I’m stuck in the wet paper bag myself ;-) As I mentioned, he actually has some really impressive drawings much better than the lamb.

He will be taking his first art classes next week (we are blessed to have a talented man coming to give classes here at our house).

I bet there are some pretty inexpensive video art classes???

  15. KB says:

“My son has a natural gift for which I am so grateful.”

That is so awesome! I’m sure you already have, but pass along to your son what a wonderful gift God as given him. And what a blessing that he’ll be able to hone his gift under the direction of an experienced artist!

I’ve tried going through the Monart (Mona Brookes “Drawing for Children”) But I’m just not diligent enough to keep going through it. A video would be fantastic, but the ones I’ve come across are ridiculously expensive (25 bucks or more) so I’d like to know a sure-thing before I invest in it.
(I know $25 doesn’t sound like much to some, but I’ve had to learn how to pinch pennies until they scream :-) ).

  16. Mary says:

Your son has good drawing ability. I love the lamb theme and the natural coloring of the fabric. If I had babies, I’d want one!

  17. Hatushili says:

They are very cute!! And work well for boy or girl!

  18. Carmen says:

Oops…What Hatushili said should have been listed as my comment. That’s what we get when we share computers, huh?! : )

  19. Faith says:

How cute! I’d love to see Ellia in one soon! ;-)

  20. Jen says:

    Kelly,
This is Casey your sons soon to be art teacher, after looking over his lamb drawing I can see several “just knowing” qualities of a wonderful and gifted talent. I am more excited to help develope his natural talent.
This is exciting for me! Its not about proportion, accuracy, nor detail, though he shows a knowledge of it, its about quality of line first, vision next, and refinement. God; the ultimate creator of all, he alone allows us to have the senses of taste, touch and vision of beauty in our enter most being. I have no doubt every single one of us has that ability, like the sense of our creation, the ability to love, feel, and just know what is beautiful. It is my belief each one of us possesses that ability and manifest it daily by Gods grace by just “being”.

Art should never be considered excellent by us through the eyes of the perverse, nor put upon the shelf of useless wares of unproductivity of believers. Its time Christians claim back what was most graciously given them, that ancient remnant, the ability to seek what is good. If Christians are a reflection of Christ himself, how can we disregard our own creativity, even if its on paper? Is that not a reflection of Gods greatness? Is it not by his own creation that we possesses the ability to be creative, to seek beauty in Gods creation and emulate it in everything we do?

I think most ppl do not think about the fine arts in every day life and KNOW how it really effects us. The fine arts well spring starts with the ability to “see beauty”, which is at the basic level of learning how to draw for the most part with exceptions. However, its the study of the fine arts that produce: Drawings, Paintings, Sculpture… not particularly really of worldy importance outside of, just that, drawing paintings or scultpure… except when you look at these spring boards. They develope into more specialized skills in the modern world like, CLOTHING, Graphic Design, Computer Graphics, Advertising… et. al. Now, how important are these right now in discriminating tastes? So is artistic creativity a worth while pursuit? You be the judge, I so happen to believe it is.

Gods blessings to you and Aaron.

Very simple, but cute! I think there is a market!

  22. Word Warrior says:

    Casey,

Thank you so much! Love the thoughts about the Creator of art…we’re so excited.

  23. authenticallyme says:

I think it is a very cute idea! Your girls could make a $$cut for the sewing. VERY endearing design, written in a child’s hand….I think the natural color looks the sweetest as well.

Only thing I am thinking Kelly, is that with the way todays ‘elaborate’ bags are, with puches and zipper sacks, and whatnot, would people tend to NOT buy an ‘open’ bag like that? Unless the purpose of the bag is only to hold the natural baby products you make (as a sort of ‘gift bag’), and the onesie, but the bag is not supposed to be used as a diaper bag in-and-of itself? Though I know in my diaper bag, with zipper pouches and all, I STILL just threw everything in any-ol-how anyway!

Otherwise, great idea if simply just for the fact of involving the kids…they will totally take off with it, on their own…and be the next Shoshana Pearl! lol….but seriously.

  24. Word Warrior says:

    AM,

Yes, I was thinking the bags would be more of just a gift bag than a diaper bag. The picture is deceiving; they are actually quite small.

  25. Heather Cinotto says:

Love it! I was looking for “Christian themed” baby wear recently and was shocked at the incredibly high prices! I, too, liked the natural-ness of your design!

  26. Kim M. says:

    Your kiddos are so talented!
You shouldn’t have trouble selling this stuff. :-) (Your local Christian bookstore might be interested too.. ya never know!)

  27. PamelaK says:

Thanks for the info, Kelly!! just adorable. will be waiting to see what you come up with for sale

  28. Jen says:

What sizes will the onesie come in? Jesse is quite the big baby, a little under 18lbs at 16wks!:) The onesie is too cute! You could also make a burp cloth and blanket? I just loved reading my honey’s comment! So inspiring! ((hugs))jen in al

How do you make an iron-on? This idea is awesome! We need to do something like this as my husband has been laid-off all summer and his being called back to work isn’t looking to promising. We just began the homeschooling journey as well and really need to find a way to make money from home. Please pray for our family as we make this transition. I know that the Lord has called us to this way of life and He will make a way where there seems to be no way! Thank you for your encouraging site!

  31. Word Warrior says:

    Audrey,

They are really quite easy–transfer paper can be bought at Wal-Mart and you just scan a picture onto your computer, add words, flip the image and print it off on the paper and iron it on according to the instructions.

As with any great idea or product, it’s not the making that is tricky, it’s the marketing ;-)

That’s why they start best as gifts–the best form of advertising, and then as your friends help you share the news, you may receive your best results that way!

You could also consider aprons, book bags, quilts, etc.
