School Bans Legos to Promote Socialism…I’m Not Kidding.

It should be noted this school is a private school.

I think I am going to throw up.

I never bought my kids Legos simply because I didn’t feel like nagging them to pick up all of the pieces. I may have to revaluate my position because I never thought of them as teaching my children to learn to take dominion before :D

Thanks for posting this little piece of craziness.

  3. Ah, my neck of the woods. And anyone wonders why I want to homeschool my kids?

Oh, and obviously, the best way to teach kids to share is to not give them anything to learn to share with…What?

It is a good thing this school only teaches reading, writing and math or these teacher’s crazy views would be taught too! oh, wait… By the way, both of my parents are teachers and they put their own world philosophy into their teaching all the time. They think they are doing the right thing.

I had my kids watch this because LEGOs are a favorite pastime here (and we DO often have to work out sharing issues).

I asked my son what he thought of the clip and if he thought it would solve his tendency to be selfish if I (as the authority) stepped in to evenly divide everything up so all children had exactly the same number of pieces in the same proportions of colors. I asked him if he thought that would cure him of the desire to build a bigger structure or hoard more pieces to himself and he said “probably not”.

I asked why he thought so and he said that it is because it wouldn’t change him on the inside. He still would desire to grab more for himself–even if it meant he would get in trouble for taking what was not given to him.

While he certainly is not perfect, he recognizes that sin comes from within our own hearts and cannot be “educated out” through externalized methods of behavior modification.

I asked the kids how they would react if I was to give them equal resources and specific directions on how they were allowed to use them and they were not all that thrilled about the concept. I wanted to know why not, if it meant they would all be exactly equal and no-one would have to feel that someone else had “more”.

They said that they would not like to be limited in their ability to create according to their own ideas. I pressed them to know WHY they think this would be BAD, rather than simply inconvenient. And my daughter said “We are made in God’s image and He is creative…He made us to be like Him.”

Our spirits yearn to imitate the God who made us! “Diversity” (as opposed to perversity) is NOT evil, as God is the author of an infinite variety of personalities, animals, plants, etc. Even Christians often fail to realize that Christ’s body is to be made of MANY different parts, with different functions–yet all are meant to glorify the Head.

Satan doesn’t want us to be free to reflect God-honoring qualities. So, he whispers in the ears of those who have rejected God that being LIKE God is counter-productive and wrong. And, because they refuse to acknowledge God’s wisdom, the blind continue to lead others to their destruction… :o (

Wow, Heather, what are trying to do, get your children to think?

  7. Emily says:

It sounds like they were doing real cool things, building a lego town, but why was so much time devoted to legos in the first place?

If “emergent curriculum” basically means socialism, it’ll be interesting to see how other schools (including public ones) push this concept on their students. I’m impressed at how Heather used it as a lesson in her own household! It will definitely cause me to keep my eyes wide open about what my kids are learning at their private preschool (later schooling options are still on the table)!

A friend dug up an article by the teachers, explaining at length the rationale behind their no-Lego decision.
This was in an after-school program, by the way.

my nephew just started kindergarten. some of the other boys and he discovered that they were all ‘cubs’ fans (guess where we live?) so they decided to call themselves the ‘cubs brothers’ and meet up everyday to talk about baseball. cute, healthy, wholesome, right? nope. sexist (saying brothers implied boys only). and gang related (the tried to wear cubs colors on game days). teacher put a stop to that. thank goodness she did too. who knows what trouble he may have gotten into. now that he thinks baseball is bad (after all, the teacher yelled at him for being a ‘cubs brother’) maybe he’ll branch out… i’m thinking vandalism? as long as they wear different colors and invite girls? i’m sorry, over-sarcasm here, this just bugs me… THEY ARE JUST LEGOS!!!!! sigh

  12. Jennifer says:

Watching this video made me think I couldn’t possibly loathe “schooling” more than I do. But then I read Shanie’s comment. WOW. Another reason to thank the Lord for leading me to homeschooling my crew.

    Shanie,

Oh wow…see it makes me think that even the “good teachers” with no evil agenda for children are still themselves being manipulated and coerced into wrong thinking.
